DEREK WATTS - co-presenter M-Net's Carte Blanche
Derek wrote news for SABC TV in its infancy (1978), was the first sports
presenter on TV1 News and Network (in the days when sport was separate) and then
launched TopSport with Martin Locke. In 1987 Derek won a Star Tonight! Award for
the best contribution in sports coverage on TV1.
Then a call from the legendary Shaka Zulu man, Bill Faure, changed his career
path and led to the formation of Carte Blanche which, 15 years on, has become an
institution on the South African scene. In 1992 Derek won a Star Tonight! Award,
this time for the best actuality reporter on any South African TV channel.
The programme has won several awards, as have the presenters and producers…about
60 major ones. They have become part of Africa, taking viewers to the primate
hunters in Cameroon, the world-beating distance runners in the highlands of
Kenya, the farm grabs and clashes in Zimbabwe, the gorillas in Rwanda and to
volcano devastated Goma in the Congo.
Derek recently flew to Star City outside Moscow and Baikonur in Khazakstan to go
behind the scenes of internet billionaire Mark Shuttleworth's space adventure.
Apart from his television work, Derek specialises in acting as MC, awards
presentations, product launches and guest speaking. His experiences and strong
sense of humour make him a sought-after speaker. He also presents and produces
corporate videos and facilitates and chairs conferences. Playing and presenting
prizes at golf days has become one of his favourite events!
