HENRY ATE
Karma is the creative force behind Henry Ate, one of the most promising South
African bands. Karma burst onto the local scene in 1996 with Henry Ate's debut
album Slap in the Face, which was produced on a shoe-string budget in 1996. When
the album came out, people started singing along to its songs and the band found
themselves playing to crowds of thousands all over the country almost overnight.
Just hit number one and Hey Mister number two on the 5FM charts. The group
performed at opening slots for international acts Skunk Anansie and Johnny
Clegg. Their second album One Day Soon was released in late 1998 with the name
change from Henry Ate to Karma which confused fans who did not think that the
album was recorded with the same Henry Ate musicians. The album received a
lukewarm response and audiences began to dwindle.
Now signed to EMI and with the name Henry Ate reinstated, Karma recorded her
latest album, the successful 15-track Torn and Tattered. The album showcases
Karma's versatility and vocal sensitivity. Max Mikula, Brendan Ou Tim, Julian
Sun, Louis Mhlanga, Angus Rose, Gary Herschelman and Kaolin Thompson all feature
on Torn and Tattered.
