KATE NORMINGTON


Kate Normington's first major musical role was in Pirates of Penzance in 1987. She performed in Andrew Lloyd-Webber's one-woman show Tell Me on a Sunday, played Eliza Doolittle in the Johannesburg production of My Fair Lady and was in Richard Loring's highly successful compilation show. She played Janet in the Johannesburg production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1992 and in 1993, she played Sandy in Grease at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. Kate has played Sheila in the Civic Theatre's production of Hair and Grace Farrell in the 21st anniversary production of the award-winning musical Annie, in London's West End in 1998 and toured England and Scotland the following year. She has co-written and performed the cabaret shows Pigs with Attitude and Pigs with Bottoms with Gaby Lomberg.

Kate has sung with jazz ensembles and with the National Symphony Orchestra. Her solo album was released by Sheer Sound in 2001. Most of the album's tracks are originals written by Kate and album producer Wessel van Rensburg. Kate performs solo with pianist Wessel van Rensburg, drummer Barry van Zyl and bass player Denny Lalouette at a number of venues country-wide, including the Grahamstown Festival. She has toured with The Johnny Cooper Big Band in Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg, White River and Magoebaskloof.

Her awards include the Vita and the Fleur du Cap awards for Best Actress in her role as Sister Mary Amnesia in Nunsense and for Excellence in Comedy.
